UD to dedicate Georgetown poultry facility Aug. 13

4 p.m., Aug. 8, 2003-The University will dedicate a new poultry research and demonstration house, located at UD’s Research and Education Center (REC) on Route 9 in Georgetown, at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 13. The dedication, free and open to the public, will be held in conjunction with Farm and Home Field Day, a free family-oriented event that runs from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

The new, state-of-the-art research and demonstration house will help poultry researchers to advance environmental practices, leading to improved air quality in poultry houses and a reduction in emissions from poultry houses.

“The facility also will serve the community as a model of best management practices on and around a working poultry farm,” Bud Malone, a Cooperative Extension poultry specialist at UD, said. “It should prove to be a valuable resource for poultry growers throughout the region.”

Malone will oversee environmental research at the facility that focuses on tree barriers around poultry houses. To advance earlier research that he conducted on commercial poultry farms, Malone and his team will plant trees around the perimeter of the new poultry research facility to gauge the effectiveness of tree barriers in filtering air from exhaust fans and in reducing noise, odor, feathers, dust and ammonia from the production houses.

Seasoned scientists won’t be the only researchers making use of the new poultry facility. Students enrolled in Delaware Technical & Community College’s poultry program also will become involved in managing the high-tech house, Malone said.

“Using a remote computer-controlled system, students will be able to monitor the facility’s air quality, temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide and ammonia emissions right from their classrooms,” Malone said. “We’re very excited about the educational opportunities that this facility will provide to the entire community.”

Construction of the 6,000-square-foot poultry research and demonstration house was partially funded by Jones-Hamilton Co., which supplies litter amendment to the poultry industry. UD and Jones-Hamilton will jointly use the facility for independent research, as well as for collaborative projects.

The state of Delaware provided funds to equip the structure. UD’s animal and food sciences department and the Sussex County Council also provided support. Companies and organizations that contributed materials and service include: Cumberland, C-Quest, EPA/DNREC NPS Program, Hired-Hand, Norris West Electrical, NYCAM, Peninsula Poultry Equipment, Sussex Conservation District, Valco, Warfel Construction, Wicks Nursery and Woodland Nursery.
