UD junior wins grant for study in Peru

1:32 p.m., June 24, 2004--Brianne Abramowicz, a junior in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, has been awarded a $1,000 study abroad grant from Phi Kappa Phi honor society.

Abramowicz, of Mount Laurel, N.J., will use the money to cover part of the cost of her trip to Urabamba Valley in Peru. She will be interning there with ProPeru Service Corps and has asked to work with women and children in the small business development interest area.

“I am really interested in the marginalization faced by the Andean population of Peru, particularly felt by the females,” Abramowicz said.

Phi Kappa Phi, one of America’s oldest and most highly selective all-discipline honor societies, seeks to recognize and promote academic excellence.

“When I had received the letter in the mail I had just gotten back from finals. I had just taken a two-hour exam, and I was exhausted,” she said. “To my surprise, I found this packet on my desk. It was such a surprise for my family and me. We had not expected this at all, and it still hasn’t completely sunk in!”

Abramowicz was among 38 undergraduate students nationwide who received a Phi Kappa Phi award to help defray expenses while participating in a study abroad program.

She had to apply for the grant with a mission statement about what she wanted out of her study abroad experience and provide a transcript, as well as letters of recommendation. Her trip will begin on July 1 and last until Aug. 16.

Students who are interested in applying for next year’s grant can visit [www.phikappaphi.org/abroad.shtml] to fill out an online application.
