Byron Cage to perform gospel songs April 18

3:39 p.m., April 9, 2004--Byron Cage, the “Prince of Praise,” will perform in concert with the University of Delaware Gospel Choir at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 18, in Mitchell Hall. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.

Minister of music at Ebenezer AME (African Methodist) Church in Fort Washington, Mass., Cage uses his soulful tenor vocals and choir director skills to confirm his faith.

Inspired by gospel singers such as the Rev. Donald Vails and Thomas Winfield, Cage began singing gospel music as a teenager. Besides serving for a decade as music director of the New Birth Church in Atlanta, Cage also has worked with the GMWA National Mass Choir, Full Gospel Baptist Mass Choir and Bishop Dennis Leonard’s Heritage Christian Center Mass Choir.

Cage’s recordings of spiritual songs include “Transparent in Your Presence,” “Dwell Among Us” and “The Prince of Praise.”

The event is sponsored by the Cultural Programming Advisory Board and the UD Gospel Choir.

Tickets for UD students, faculty and staff are $9. (Two $9 tickets can be purchased with each UD ID). Tickets purchased off campus are $20 each. Tickets are available at all UD box offices and Ticketmaster outlets, where a convenience charge may apply.

For ticket information, call the UD box office at 831-4012, or Ticketmaster at 984-2000. For more information, call the Center for Black Culture at 831-2991.
