‘Girls Got Game’ a hit with local youth

11:47 a.m., Dec. 22, 2003--About 40 girls ages 9-11 braved the remnants of Delaware’s second significant winter storm to take part in “Girls Got Game,” a sport-related activity held from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 14, in UD’s Delaware Field House.

Hosted by about 25 health and exercise sciences students who designed and ran the program, the event promoted sports and physical activity among local girls. Activities included the practice of four skills while working in small groups with UD athletes from the field hockey, lacrosse, rowing and volleyball programs.

“We had athletes from three UD varsity sports, as well as three UD club sports, including volleyball, basketball and rowing,” Nancy Getchell, assistant professor of health and exercise sciences, said. “We also had the Diamond Elite giving a cheerleading demonstration, and representatives from Phoenix Ice Hockey and Kirkwood Soccer programs putting on a demonstration.”

Getchell, who also teaches HESC/484, Women in Sports, said the girls topped off the afternoon’s activities by joining their parents, as well as UD athletes and students, for pizza and a sports drink.

“When surveyed about the day’s events, the girls said they really enjoyed the variety of sports and rated the program a perfect 10,” Getchell said. “We hope to do this again next year.”
