Service for James Gilliam set Aug. 26 at Carpenter Center

11:50 a.m., Aug. 25, 2003--A funeral service for James H. Gilliam Jr. will be held at noon, Tuesday, Aug. 26, in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. A viewing is scheduled there from 9-11:30 a.m., and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity rituals will be at 10:45 a.m.

A friend of the University, Mr. Gilliam, 58, died Aug. 20 at his home.

An attorney and private investor, until June 1998, he was executive vice president and general counsel of Beneficial Corp. and a member of its executive committee and board. He also chaired its commercial banking subsidiary, Beneficial National Bank.

Before joining Beneficial in 1979, Mr. Gilliam served as secretary of housing and economic development in the cabinet of then Gov. Pierre S. du Pont. Earlier, he was in private practice with the law firms of Richards, Layton & Finger in Wilmington and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York City.

Mr. Gilliam was a member of the boards of directors of Household International Inc. and of T. Rowe Price Group Inc. and a trustee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the National Geographic Society, the Hodson Trust and the CTW Foundation. He also chaired the Gilliam Foundation.

He was active in a number of organizations, including serving as founding chairperson of Wilmington 2000, chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Goldey Beacom College, chairperson of the Board of Visitors of Delaware State University, chairperson of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the State of Delaware and secretary of the Board of Bar Examiners for the State of Delaware.

Mr. Gilliam’s awards and honors included the Wilmington Branch NAACP Presidential Award for Advocacy in the Education and Civil Rights Arena for over 25 years, the Delaware State University Millennium Award, the 2002 Christi Award for Outstanding Philanthropy to the Arts and honorary degrees from Morgan and Delaware State universities.
