'Save the Gap!' campaign under way
4:35 p.m., Aug. 22, 2003--The Gap is a thriving presence on Main Street in Newarkoffering the kind of comfortable, durable, informal clothes that are a hallmark of todays college students.
But although the store has been successful in meeting its sales goals, the Gap chain reportedly is planning to close the store as part of an overall strategy to cut back on smaller stores to save overhead, according to Maureen Feeney Roser, assistant planning director of the Downtown Newark Partnership.
Having the Gap leave would create a gap in the variety of stores on Main Street, according to Roser. However, if there is strong community support for the store, Gap management may reconsider the closing.
The spokesperson told me that strong community support would be taken into consideration before the closing, which I took to mean overwhelming support, she said.
While there is another Gap store in Christiana Mall, also with a Newark address, it is several miles away, and the Gap on Main Street has a lot of potential as it is convenient and attracts students and parents, as well as local residents, Roser said.
Anyone interested in the Save the Gap! campaign, may call the Gap offices by dialing 1-800-427-7895, entering 4, entering 4 again and then entering 2 to speak to a Gap representative or leave a voice mail message in support of the Gap on Main Street.
