Alice Pepper Gallagher

August 12, 2003— Alice Pepper Gallagher, 89, of Cokesbury Village, died Aug. 10. She was a member of UD’s Class of 1936.

Born March 27, 1914, in Georgetown, Mrs. Gallagher was a graduate of Georgetown High School and the University of Delaware, where she majored in history.

A former utility teacher in the Caesar Rodney school system, she married Hugh F. Gallagher Jr., a member of UD’s Class of 1937. They lived most of their married life in Newark, where her husband founded the Silverbrook Development Co., the first subdivision in Newark. Later, he developed Oaklands in west Newark. During the early 1960s, the Gallaghers were one of several sponsors of a Warner Hall program to improve students’ poise and social graces.

A member of the Daughters of Colonial Wars and a staff guide for 19 years at the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, Mrs. Gallagher had a lifelong interest in history and community affairs. She served as president of the Newark New Century Club, chair of the Newark Cotillion and was a charter member of the Friends of the Newark Free Library and the Newark Historical Society.

Active in the University of Delaware Alumni Association, she received its Outstanding Alumna award in 1974. She served on the association’s Board of Directors from 1967-70 and during that time chaired a committee that renovated the public areas of Alumni Hall. She was the University of Delaware alumni representative to the committee that founded the Blue & Gold Club and served as one of its charter directors when it opened in 1972.

Mrs. Gallagher donated the Hugh F. Gallagher Jr. Family Papers to UD in 1991-92, and they are now in the University of Delaware Library’s Special Collections Department.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 15, at the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 East Main St., Newark. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Lounge.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her memory to "Special Collections in support of the study of Delaware History,” c/o Development Office, University of Delaware, Academy Building, 105 East Main Street, Newark, Delaware 19706-0701.
