New Hampshire next for 5-0 Fightin' Blue Hens

11:50 a.m., Oct. 6, 2003--The University of Delaware football team is now 5-0 after an explosive 41-27 victory over the College of William & Mary in an Atlantic 10 Football Conference game played Saturday night at Delaware Stadium before a crowd of 20,485.

G.J. Crescione

The No. 4-ranked Fightin’ Blue Hens scored five touchdowns on the ground and senior quarterback Andy Hall threw for 236 yards and another score. It was the fourth time in five games UD scored 40 or more points and the sixth straight game in which the Hens have registered more than 400 years in total offense.

UD, which is off to its best start since the 2000 team started 8-0, will play at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 11, with kickoff at noon. The Hens are 3-0 in conference.

New Hampshire is 2-4 overall and 0-3 in conference, falling 44-30 to nationally ranked Massachusetts on Saturday. Wildcat quarterback Mike Granieri was 30 of 53 for 310 yards and three touchdowns.

Against William & Mary, Delaware opened the scoring on its first drive of the night, reaching the end zone when Hall hooked up with G.J. Crescione on a 23-yard play. It was Hall's 10th scoring pass of the season.

Delaware increased the lead to 14-0 on a fake field goal try when holder Joe Bleymaier kept the ball and ran in from eight yards out.

William & Mary wide receiver Rich Musinski and quarterback Lang Campbell hooked up for their first of three scoring passes from eight yards out early in the second quarter.

Delaware responded with a two-yard scoring burst by Antawn Jenkins and then a 15-yard touchdown run by Hall with just 49 seconds left in the half to build a 28-7 lead. That score was set up when Ben Cross recovered a William & Mary fumble at the 15-yard line.

William & Mary fought back with a field goal to trail 28-10 at the half.

After William & Mary cut the lead to 28-17 on an 18-yard pass play from Campbell to Musinski with 12:12 left in the third quarter, the Hens answered when running back Germaine Bennett capped an 80-yard drive with a one-yard dive.

After William & Mary followed with a 31-yard field goal by Greg Kuehn, his second of the game, Delaware answered again, going 80 yards on three plays as Hall hit Brian Ingram on a 56-yard pass and Jenkins scored from nine yards out for a 41-20 lead with 13:17 left.

"That was a huge possession," Delaware Head Coach K.C. Keeler, who won his 99th career game, said. "Our offense got the momentum back and it took some pressure off the defense. Our backs weren't against the wall, but it certainly helped. It's nice to play the game from out front."

"We played hard but made too many mistakes," William & Mary Head Coach Jimmye Laycock said. "If you don't play mistake-free football, playing hard doesn't get it done. Delaware is a very good team, an explosive team."

William & Mary (1-3, 0-2 Atlantic 10) dropped its second straight game despite an outstanding effort from Campbell and Musinski. Campbell clicked on 27 of 37 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns, all to Musinski, who hauled in nine passes for 109 yards.

For Delaware, Jenkins rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns, Bennett ran for 66 yards and one touchdown, and Hall ran for 57 yards to pace a strong ground game.
