Blue-White scrimmage draws 4,000 Hen fans

Members of the 2003 national championship football team flash their new rings.
3:59 p.m., April 19, 2004--Four thousand fans turned out to get a sneak preview of the defending NCAA Division I-AA University of Delaware football team during the annual Blue-White scrimmage played Friday evening at Delaware Stadium.

National championship rings were presented after the scrimmage, which wrapped up four weeks of spring practice.

Junior transfer Santino “Sonny” Riccio and sophomore Ryan Carty, who are battling to take over the starting quarterback spot in 2004, each threw touchdown passes.

Riccio, who comes to UD from the University of Missouri, completed eight of 13 passes for 152 yards, including a 39-yard scoring pass to junior Joe Bleymaier. He also rushed three times for eight yards.

Bleymaier caught four passes for a game-high 65 yards.

Carty, who served as backup to All-American Andy Hall during the championship season, completed five of seven passes for 36 yards, including a six-yard touchdown pass to junior Brian Ingram. Ingram caught four passes for 26 yards.

"There was a combination of things we wanted to accomplish tonight," UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said. "We wanted this to be competitive and we did that. We've had 13 opportunities to practice this spring and evaluate this team, and this was one of them. We were happy with what we saw from both Sonny and Ryan, and they both did some encouraging things."

The offense gained 303 total yards on 56 plays during the scrimmage, including 92 yards on 29 carries on the ground and 211 yards passing. Sophomore Niquan Lee, the team's No. 3 running back a year ago, was the game's leading rusher with 29 yards on four carries while redshirt freshman Anthony Cinelli picked up 24 yards on three carries and junior Roger Brown, a converted cornerback and a part-time starter the last two seasons, gained 22 yards on eight carries.

On special teams, senior kicker Brad Shushman connected on three of six field goals, hitting from 20, 27 and 42 yards. Sophomore punter Mike Weber averaged 45.6 yards on eight punts.
