Cynthia Cummings, associate vice president, for campus life, attended the NAACP awards ceremony with Lionell Flamer, AS 2004. |
Flamer won for his understanding of complex political action issues and his work on behalf of others. While other students were planning for spring break last March, Flamer was organizing a large contingent from the University to join the march on the U.S. Supreme Court in support of affirmative action. Students and faculty filled two buses and several cars.
Although it was the first time he had ever participated in a march, Flamer organized other students, explained issues and coached participants in protest behavior.
Flamer said the NAACP award was mind-blowing.
I was extremely honored to be recognized by an organization that has such as long history in civil rights as the NAACP. Since 1909, theyve been there. To be recognized by an organization with that history was mind-blowing because thats just what I want to dowork on civil rights.
Flamer said he hopes to attend graduate school next year and study public policy.
I want to be the person who creates policylike the person who creates the No Child Left Behind Act and welfare reforms and housing reforms, he said.
