Blue Hens Balmer, LaBar win field hockey honors

10:55 a.m., Sept. 25, 2003--University of Delaware field hockey players Jessi Balmer and Erica LaBar have earned honors after an important week that saw the Fightin’ Blue Hens jump into the national rankings.

Balmer, a junior, was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, and LaBar, also a junior, was named NCAA Division I Player of the Week by the web site [www.womensfieldhockey.com].

Balmer scored twice in the final 6:19 of Saturday's 4-3 win over No. 12 Northeastern University, and on the game-winner converted a pass from LaBar.

LaBar, meanwhile, scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner in a 2-1 win over No. 18 Northwestern on Sept. 15 and added one goal and an assist in Saturday's win over the Huskies.

With the victories, UD entered the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll at No. 15.

It was the second time Balmer has garnered CAA Player of the Week honors this season. She is the fourth different Blue Hen to earn CAA weekly honors. Freshman Katie Evans earned Rookie of the Week honors last week, while freshman goalkeeper Megan Allen earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors three weeks ago. Additionally, LaBar earned Player of the Week honors earlier this season.
