Hen field hockey team prepares for CAA playoffs

10:55 a.m. Nov. 3, 2003--After closing its regular season with a 2-0 victory over Towson University on Oct. 31, the University of Delaware field hockey team is now preparing for the Colonial Athletic Association playoffs.

Erica LaBar

The Fightin’ Blue Hens have received the third seed in the four-team field and will take on the College of William and Mary on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

In the other semifinal, top seed Old Dominion will play Virginia Commonwealth University.

The winner of the CAA tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I championship tournament.

In the victory over Towson, UD junior Erica LaBar scored twice and Hen goalkeeper Megan Allen recorded her fifth shutout of the season.

LaBar scored her 10th goal of the season with 1:03 left in the first half to give UD a 1-0 lead. She re-directed a ball hit by Jessi Balmer that found the back of the net.

LaBar later converted a penalty corner to give the Hens a 2-0 lead. Eight minutes into the second half, LaBar scored her 11th of the season with help from Jessica Breault and Leah Geib.

LaBar has 33 points this season, which ties her for ninth on the UD single-season list with Missy Meharg, who had 33 points in 1982. Meharg is now head coach at the University of Maryland.

LaBar also has 68 career points (23 goals and 22 assists), which ties her for 13th place all-time at UD.

The shutout by Allen was UD’s third straight shutout and the Hens have not surrendered a goal since a 4-0 loss to Maryland on Oct. 19. It is the first time since October 1999 that the Hens have recorded three straight shutouts.
