Blue Hen field hockey earns tournament split


1:10 p.m., Sep. 2, 2003--After falling 3-1 to Duke University, the University of Delaware field hockey team defeated Rutgers 5-0 to earn a split in the Blue Hen Classic tournament played Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30-31, at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens return to action on Saturday, Sept. 6, when they travel to the University of Pennsylvania. Game time is 1 p.m.

In the victory over Rutgers, UD junior All-American candidate Erica LaBar scored two goals and added two assists.

Senior Jessica Breault had two assists for the Blue Hens while sophomore Jen Adamek and freshmen Stephanie Swain, Amanda Warrington and Katie Evans all registered their first career points.

Delaware opened the scoring just 2:27 into the game as LaBar knocked home a loose ball for her first goal. Swain made it 2-0 at the 13:23 mark, banging home a shot into an open net.

Second half goals by LaBar, sophomore Leah Geib and junior Lauren Carr sealed the win.

The Blue Hens held a 19-1 shot advantage and received 11 penalty corners compared to two for the Scarlet Knights (1-1).

In the game against Duke, the Blue Devils opened the scoring at the 4:55 mark of the first half as Katie Grant scored an unassisted goal. Delaware knotted the score at the 20:53 mark of the half when LaBar scored off a penalty corner. Senior Jessica Breault and junior Leah Geib recorded assists on the goal.

Johanna Bischof put Duke ahead 2-1 at the 39:55 mark of the game, converting a feed from Hilary Linton and beating Blue Hen goalkeeper Megan Allen. The Blue Devils added an insurance tally late, as Chrissie Murphy scored off a pass from Katie Grant.

Allen stopped five Blue Devil shots in her first collegiate game. Duke’s Christy Morgan had six saves.
