Festival brings fall harvest to Main Street Oct. 4
2:35 p.m., Sept. 30, 2003--From noon-5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 4, the Academy Building lawn on Main Street will see a lot more orange as the Newark Heritage Alliance hosts the annual Newark Harvest Festival.
The free family event, which features live entertainment, homemade craft items, pumpkins and other produce from local farms, celebrates the 1758 legalization by King George II of harvest festivals in the American colonies.
Festival highlights include a performance by the Newark Fife and Drum Corps and Shepherds Pipes; folk dancing by the Dover-English Country Dancers and the Newark International Dancers; a skit by the Ring Players; and an historical re-enactment by members of the New Sweden Center. Representatives from several local organizations also will be on hand to disseminate information about community involvement. In addition, a wide array of fall flowers, pumpkins, gourds and other seasonal produce will be displayed for sale.
In the event of rain, the festival will be held from noon-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 5. The event is sponsored by the Newark Heritage Alliance, with support from the city of Newark and the University of Delaware. For more information, call Alice Shurtleff at 368-0209.
