Country day trip promises family fun

11:10 a.m., July 31, 2003--Enjoy a day trip in the country from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 13, at UD’s annual Farm and Home Field Day, held at UD’s Research and Education Center on Route 9, west of Georgetown.

Now in its 55th year, the free public event is oriented to both farmers and the general public. The day’s agenda includes

  • Fun-filled educational activities for children;
  • Master gardener demonstrations;
  • Field tours by wagon;
  • Carriage rides through the expansive grounds; and
  • Animal exhibits by local 4-H clubs.

Other highpoints include Sussex County Safe Kids Day, a special component of Farm and Home Field Day dedicated to educating children and their caregivers about “playing it safe.” Jointly sponsored by UD, the Delaware Safe Kids Coalition, the Sussex County Safety Council and area businesses, Sussex County Safe Kids Day features car seat checks, fingerprinting, children’s aerobics, costumed characters, face painting and much more.

Tickets for Farm and Home Field Day’s traditional noontime chicken barbecue luncheon are $6 and can be purchased on site, the morning of the event.

At 1:30 p.m., a dedication ceremony will be held in honor of the Research and Education Center’s new, state-of-the-art poultry research and demonstration house.
