Debate over evolution set April 28

11:50 a.m., April 26, 2004--A debate over the theory of evolution titled “Intelligent Design as Scientific Theory: Possible or Preposterous?” is set for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, in 130 Smith Hall.

Designed to give equal time to the theory of evolution and the competing theory of creationism, also known as intelligent design, the program will feature John McDonald, UD professor of biological sciences, and Tom Woodward, Trinity College, Fla., professor of communication.

McDonald, who teaches evolutionary genetics and biological statistics, has had extensive lab experience observing the effects of natural selection on the nuclei of genes.

Woodward, who proposes that creationism be taught alongside evolution in public schools, has published the book “Doubts about Darwin.”

Both McDonald and Woodward will use PowerPoint presentations to illustrate their points, and will allow time for audience input at the end of each of their presentations.

The free public debate is the spring component of the Inquiry for Truth program sponsored by the Secular Student Alliance, Church and Campus Connection, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, the Civil Liberties Union, Students in the Public Interest, the Department of Philosophy, Delaware Interdisciplinary Ethics, the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Biological Sciences.

For more information, call Mike Fox, student facilitator, at 837-8615.
