UD observes National Engineers Week

3:52 p.m., Feb. 18, 2004--The 53rd anniversary celebration of National Engineers Week, which runs from Feb. 19-28 at UD, includes a job fair, a broom hockey tournament, an engineering Olympics and a “Women in Engineering” night.

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Engineers Week is celebrated each year by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers and leaders in business and government.

UD’s College of Engineering plans a wide range of activities to mark the occasion at UD. All events are open to members of the UD community unless otherwise noted.

Thursday, Feb. 19

Sixth annual Engineering and Technology Jobs Fair—with 40 companies represented, the event will introduce students of engineering, science and technology to the employment opportunities and career challenges in the high-tech workforce, from 1-4 p.m., in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Trabant University Center. Friday-Saturday, Feb. 20-21

Broom Hockey—midnight-2 a.m., Rust Ice Arena, with chemical, electrical/computer, mechanical and civil/environmental engineering students, faculty and staff competing in a round-robin contest. Sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Saturday, Feb. 21

Engineering Olympics—featuring competition among engineering departments, 1-4 p.m., Carpenter Sports Building. Sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers.

Monday, Feb. 23

Quizzo Night—with teams of students, staff and/or faculty competing in a college bowl format, 7-9 p.m., The Scrounge, Perkins Student Center. Sponsored by Tau Beta Pi.

Ethics speaker—“Digital ethics in the new millennium,” by a speaker yet to be announced,” 2-3 p.m., 109 Willard Hall. Sponsored by Sigma Phi Delta.

Tuesday, Feb. 24

Order of the Engineer Ring Ceremony—a formal ceremony to induct students into the fellowship of engineers trained in science and technology, and dedicated to the teaching, administration and/or practice of their profession, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Mitchell Hall. A reception will follow in the lobby. The event is recommended for graduating seniors, graduate students and their families. Sponsored by UD College of Engineering.

Wednesday, Feb. 25

Women in Engineering Night—an opportunity for UD students to interact with women professional engineers, faculty members and graduate students, 4:30-5:15 p.m. (mentor/mentee participants), 5:15-6 p.m. (general program), Multipurpose Rooms, Trabant University Center. Sponsored by College of Engineering and the Society of Women Engineers.

Senior Design Presentations Awards—for projects finished in December by senior mechanical engineering students, 6-9:30 p.m., Clayton Hall.
