Acclaimed crime journalist to speak March 1

2:21 p.m., Feb. 25, 2004--David Simon, author of two highly praised works of crime journalism, will hold a discussion and book signing, at 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 1, in the Collins Room of the Perkins Student Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

Simon is the author of “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets,” which became a fictionalized and award-winning television series. His second book, “The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood,” which he coauthored with Edward Burns, was hailed as a notable book of the year by The New York Times, and was adopted as a six-hour docudrama by HBO.

Currently working in television, Simon is about to begin his third season as a writer and producer for the HBO series, “The Wire.”

A native of Baltimore, Simon graduated from the journalism program at the University of Maryland, where he was editor-in-chief of The Diamond, the campus newspaper. Having worked at the Baltimore Sun for many years, Simon has written and spoken about the challenge of making newspapers less restrictive about the form and content of crime reporting.

A book signing will be held after Simon’s informal talk.
