Philadelphia Phillies draft UD pitcher Mike Mihalik
Mihalik, a 6-foot 3-inch, 210-pound righthander was the lone Fightin Blue Hens player selected in the annual draft. UD has had at least one player selected in the annual draft each of the last four seasons and in seven of the last eight. Mihalik is the first Blue Hen drafted by the Phillies since Vince Vukovich was selected in the 20th round in 2001. UD had two players selected last season when pitcher Mark Michael was picked in the third round by the St. Louis Cardinals and infielder Kris Dufner was picked in the 38th round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Mihalik capped an outstanding career in 2004 as he led UD to a record of 34-22. The Blue Hens advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship game, falling to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. A co-captain for UD Head Coach Jim Sherman, Mihalik appeared in 17 games in 2004. He started a team-high 15 games and pitched two complete games. He also led the team with 104.1 innings pitched and 98 strikeouts. He posted a 5-3 record and a 4.24 earned run average. Mihalik finished his career with a record of 19-14 and set a UD career record with 274 strikeouts. He ranks fourth all-time in games pitched (61) and fifth in innings pitched (302.1). A College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America nominee, Mihalik earned his bachelors degree in geology and geography from UD in May. He received the University's ECAC Medal of Merit as the male senior letter winner with the highest grade point average (3.58), was named the UD Student Services for Athletes Outstanding Contributor Award and was presented the baseball team's Perry Burkett Triple Play Award for leadership and special contributions to the team.
