Kids bored? Plan a summer visit to UD
2:25 p.m., July 8, 2003--From sports to solar walks and radio station tours, there is always something for kids to do on the University of Delawares campus in the summer. A positive learning experience and fun for all, families may want to take advantage of the many opportunities offered through UD for family fun.
Day trips
- Take a field trip to WVUD, the voice of the University of Delaware, where kids can get a tour of the radio stations studio, located in the Perkins Student Center. Flip through the stations collection of records, CDs and tapes, and learn how a radio station operates. Call ahead to arrange a tour, at 831-3593 or visit the stations web site at [www.wvud.org].
- Check out the vast array of dazzling gems at UDs Irénée du Pont Mineralogical Museum on Academy Street, Newark. One of the top mineral exhibits in the country, the museums gem room offers kids the chance to view rare specimens close-up and even learn the difference between fools gold and the real thing. Admission is free. For days and times, call 831-2926 or visit the web site at [www.museums.udel.edu/mineral/index.html]. To schedule a group tour, call the museum office at 831-8242 or e-mail your request to [bchapp@udel.edu].
- To learn more about the solar system and how far apart the planets are, families can walk to replicas of all nine planets and the sun, starting at Old College and continuing throughout campus. In this scale model of the solar system, planets are featured outside various campus buildings. To jump from Mars to Jupiter and Neptune to Pluto, call 831-8242.
Sports
- Gain a little exercise with the kids on the ice at UDs Fred Rust Ice Arena, and if you or your child need a few skating tips, call the rink at 831-2788 for information about lessons and public skating hours. Group discount rates available. For the birthday in the family, plan a party on the ice by calling 831-2868 for reservations. For more information, visit [www.udel.edu/icearena/public/#info].
