Free cone day at Trabant set April 27

3:24 p.m., April 23, 2004--If you love ice cream and are willing to wait in line, you’ll want to stake a spot in front of the Ben & Jerry’s kiosk at the Trabant University Center on Tuesday, April 27. From noon-8 p.m., as a way to say thanks to the community, all cones and cups are free to anyone who shows up.

According to Christopher Hack, food service director at the Trabant University Center, the day of free cones is an annual event, begun in 1996, that extends the social consciousness of the ice cream company to the local level. “Ben & Jerry’s has always taken an interest in building community and preserving the environment, so this is the company’s way of giving back,” he said.

In addition to celebrating loyal customers, the day of appreciation also is designed to boost social awareness, and representatives from Rock the Vote will be present to register those 18 and older.

“In past years, the event has had a social component,” Hack said. “Last year, the focus was on the ozone layer.”

Judging from response, the message is getting through. Last year’s lines were nonstop, and more than 3,600 cones were served.

Flavors offered include the top-selling favorites vanilla, Cherry Garcia, chocolate chip cookie dough and Phish Food—a concoction of chocolate ice cream with marshmallows, caramel sauce and fudge bits shaped like fish.

Regular business at the ice cream stand will be closed for the day, and no money will change hands.
