Symphony seeks student musicians for competition

3:49 p.m., June 11, 2004--The 27th annual Concerto Competition for Young Musicians, sponsored by the Newark Symphony Orchestra, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.

Students in high school and college are invited to participate, and a winner from each level will be chosen to receive $300 and the opportunity to play in a spring concert with the orchestra.

Those who wish to compete must perform on a stringed, wind, percussion instrument or a piano. Contestants also must perform by memory a major work for solo instrument and orchestra that does not exceed 15 minutes.

Applications must be received no later than Friday, Oct. 8, and contestants must include a $25 application fee. Apply by calling the symphony business office at 369-3466 or by writing to the Newark Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 7775, Newark, DE 19714-7775.
