March 14 concert, discussion showcase singer Ruth Gerson

4:58 p.m., March 10, 2004--Ruth Gerson, the New York City-based singer-songwriter who has been compared to Grace Slick and Natalie Merchant, will visit campus for a concert and informal discussion on Sunday, March 14.

Gerson’s discussion on breaking into the music industry and starting an independent record label will begin at 1 p.m., in the Scrounge at the Perkins Student Center. A concert by Gerson will follow, in which she’ll highlight songs from her latest CD, “Wake to Echo.”

Gerson has worked with such notable musicians as John Cale and Don Dixon and has been praised by The New York Times for creating songs that possess “a bracing mixture of defiance and open-heartedness.” She has recorded five CDs, all of which she markets independently.

Both the talk and the concert are sponsored by the Office of Women’s Affairs and are part of the Women’s History Month festivities. The afternoon event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 831-8063.
