Cashier’s check scam alert

2:09 p.m., Sept. 17, 2003--There have been a couple of scams on campus involving UDaily classified ads and forged cashier’s checks, according to Jim Flatley, assistant director of Public Safety. Users should be aware of possible scams and be cautious about transactions where the check is larger than the asking price, and a refund is requested, he said.

In one instance, a seller listed an expensive musical instrument, and a purported buyer sent a cashier’s check for thousands of dollars more than the price of the instrument and requested a refund. Fortunately, before the refund was sent, it was determined that the cashier’s check was a forgery.

According to a local news story on KYW-TV news, this scam has victimized several persons in the region, where con artists paid for online purchases with counterfeit cashier’s checks. The article suggests a waiting period of four weeks after a cashier’s check clears to make sure it is good before completing the transaction and to be careful in dealing with foreign purchasers.
