500 years of book design celebrated May 5

5:17 p.m., May 3, 2004--Tours, a letterpress exhibit and a hands-on typesetting session are just some of the activities planned for UD’s Day of the Book celebration set for Wednesday, May 5.

Starting at 9 a.m. and running until 4 p.m., the day will offer guided tours of Raven Press, (UD’s letterpress facility in the Visual Communications Group in the Department of Fine Arts and Visual Communications) a close-up look at important books and book forms in the Morris Library collection and a tour of the Winterthur Library and current exhibition “Five Centuries of Design and Inspiration.”

A lecture at Winterthur by Shelley Sturman, objects conservator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., will cap the day’s festivities. (Transportation to and from Winterthur is provided.)

The event is sponsored by UD’s Center for Material Culture Studies.
