Riley leads cross country team to George Mason title

11:25 a.m., Oct. 6, 2003--Senior Patrick Riley continued to dominate, winning his third race of the season and leading the University of Delaware men's cross country team to the team championship at the George Mason Invitational Saturday morning at Bull Run Park in Virginia.

The Fightin’ Blue Hen women tied for fifth and were led by freshman Meghan Weaver, who finished in a tie for 13th in the individual standings.

The Delaware men, who won their second meet of the season, placed five runners in the top 10 to total 26 points and easily outdistance runner-up Hofstra (70). Radford was third (74), followed by Howard (102), Mount St. Mary's (126) and George Mason (128).

Hofstra runners took the first three individual spots in the women’s race and won the women's team title with 33 points. Howard was second with 39, followed by George Mason (82), Radford (106), Delaware (119) and Mount St. Mary's (119).

Riley, who won his eighth career individual cross country title and led the Hens for the 20th straight competition in which he has competed, covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:30.38, easily outdistancing runner-up Goran Nava of Radford (25:45.71) by more than 15 seconds. Sections of the course were covered in water and knee-deep mud.

Also for the Hens, senior Mike Sadowsky finished third (26:30.54), freshman P.J. Meany sixth (26:46.01), sophomore Kevin DuPrey seventh (26:47.08) and freshman Patrick Wilcox ninth (27:03.62).

Weaver covered the 5,000-meter women's course in 20:46.00 to place tied for 13th. Also for the Hens, sophomore Erin Bortz finished 22nd (21:16.98), sophomore Renee Gresh 27th (21:33.34), sophomore Lauren Shaub 28th (21:38.24) and senior Mary Martini 33rd (21:48.49).
