Center for Black Culture sets fall events

8:55 a.m., Sep. 4, 2003--A welcome back jam and a block party are part of the fall events presented by the Center for Black Culture (CBC) and the Cultural Programming Advisory Board (CPAB).

Friday, Sept. 5—”Welcome Back Jam,” 10 p.m.-2 a.m., Multipurpose Room, Trabant University Center, as part of CPAB’s “Icebreaker Weekend.” Free for freshman, others $2.

Saturday, Sept. 6—“Block Party,” featuring free food, performances by SPIT and Dark Arts, and the National Pan Hellenic Council (MPHC) step show. Also an opportunity to learn more about the CBC and various organizations within the Black Leadership Council, 1-5 p.m., Center for Black Culture, 192 South College Ave.

Saturday, Sept. 13—“Freshman Family Weekend,” Center for Black Culture open house, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The entire family is invited to visit the Center for Black Culture, meet the staff and learn about upcoming programs.

Tuesday, Sept. 23—Each One Reach One (EORO) faculty vs. student basketball game, 6:30 p.m., Carpenter Sports Building.

Wednesday, Oct. 8—“The Souls of Black Folk: Fingering the Wounds of A People,” with Carol E. Henderson, associate professor of English at UD, 5 p.m., Center for Black Culture, as part of the CBC Faculty/Visiting Scholar Lecture Series. Henderson will discuss her most recent work, “Scarring the Black Body: Race and Representation in African-American Literature,” and how 19th- and 20th-century history influences the ways we veiw our minds and bodies in the 21st century. Book signing and reception will follow.

Saturday, Oct. 18—Annual Homecoming barbecue, 2:30-5:30 p.m., Center for Black Culture.

Sunday, Nov. 2—“Aida on Broadway,” bus trip to New York City. Buses leave the Center for Black Culture at 8 a.m. and return 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale at UD box offices early October. For more information, call CPAB at 831-2070 or CBC at 831-2991.

Friday, Dec. 5—Annual Kwannzaa celebration, 7 p.m., Multipurpose Room, Trabant University Center.
