UD soccer players Lewing, Mills earn CAA recognition

Ginna Lewing
10:17 a.m., Oct. 28, 2003--The Colonial Athletic Association has recognized two University of Delaware women’s soccer team members, senior defender Ginna Lewing and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Bonnie Mills.

Lewis was named the CAA Player of the Week and Mills the Rookie of the Weeks, the conference announced Monday.

Playing in her 74th career match, Lewing scored the game-winning goal in the Blue Hens' 1-0 victory over conference rival James Madison University on Sunday. Lewing headed home a corner kick from sophomore Mary Beth Creed in the 41st minute.

An all-conference honoree in 2002, Lewing's presence in the backfield is reflected to the fact that UD is giving up just 0.83 goals per game.

Mills, seeing action for injured starting goalkeeper Lindsay Shover, posted two shutout victories, over St. Francis College and James Madison University, in just the second and third starts of her career. Mills made four saves in each match and lowered her goals against average to 0.29. She has allowed only one goal in just over 301 minutes of action this season.

This marks the second time a UD women's soccer player has been named a CAA Player of the Week this season. Senior Caryn Blood received the honor the week of Sept. 22 after scoring two goals and two assist against Howard University.

Until Mills, no UD player had been awarded the CAA Rookie of the Week honor since Shover earned recognition in 2002.

UD will return to action at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, when the Hens play at Virginia Commonwealth University. The team will conclude regular season play at the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1.
