UD men’s basketball team prepares for CAA tourney

Senior Mike Ames leads UD into the CAA tournament.
10:31 a.m., March 4, 2004--The University of Delaware men's basketball squad is preparing for its Colonial Athletic Association tournament quarterfinal game against George Mason University, to be played at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, March 6, at the Richmond Coliseum.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed and in George Mason face the No. 3 seed.

The Hens finished the regular season with a record of 16-11. They ended on a high note, defeating No. 2 seed Drexel University 76-64 at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

George Mason, the pre-season favorite to capture the CAA championship, enters the tournament with a record of 19-8 overall.

In last year’s tournament, UD defeated George Mason 61-49 in the quarterfinal round.

The two teams split the season series this year, with the Hens winning 74-65 on Jan. 28 at The Bob and George Mason winning 75-61 on Feb. 21 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va.

CAA tournament action gets under way on Friday, March 5, with two first round games.

No. 8 seed William & Mary (7-20) will take on No. 9 Towson (7-20) at 5:30 p.m.

After that game, two-time defending league champion and No. 7 seed University of North Carolina Wilmington (13-14) will take on No. 10 James Madison (7-20).

Saturday's quarterfinal action will begin at noon with top seed Virginia Commonwealth (20-7) taking on the winner of the William & Mary-Towson game.

No. 4 Old Dominion (16-11) will play No. 5 Hofstra (14-14) at 2:30 p.m.

The evening session begins at 6 p.m. with No. 2 Drexel (18-9) against the winner of the UNC Wilmington-James Madison game.

That will be followed by the UD-George Mason game at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday's semifinal games will be played at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and the championship game is set for Monday at 7 p.m. The championship will be aired live on ESPN. The winner of the tournament earns an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

UD, which has advanced to the semifinals each of their two seasons in the CAA under Head Coach David Henderson, is hoping to go further this year. If the Hens win the conference tournament, they would earn their fifth NCAA berth. UD last advanced in 1999 after winning the America East Conference title.

UD is led by senior guard Mike Ames, sophomore forward Harding Nana and junior point guard Mike Slattery. Ames averages a team-high 15.3 points per game and ranks among the CAA leaders in three-pointers (59), Nana averages 13.1 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game and Slattery scores 10.8 points per game and leads the CAA in assists with 6.0 per game.

George Mason, which last won the CAA title in 2001, enters the tournament having won three straight games and five of its last six.

The Patriots feature a balanced lineup with three players scoring in double figures. Jai Lewis leads the way with team highs of 14.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, while Mark Davis averages 14.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Lamar Butler has hit on 67 three-pointers and averages 11.2 points per game, and point guard Terry Reynolds is second in the CAA in assists with 5.7 per game.
