UD volleyball star Murphy is CAA Player of Week

10:40 a.m., Oct. 14, 2003--University of Delaware junior Valerie Murphy has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Volleyball Player of the Week.

Murphy led the Fightin’ Blue Hens to a perfect 3-0 record last week, collecting 47 kills with a hitting percentage of .404 and nine total blocks.

She began the week with 17 kills and a .483 hitting percentage in a 3-0 victory over Loyola College, then notched 14 kills and five digs in a 3-0 win over CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday night.

Murphy topped off the week with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .609 in a 3-0 sweep of James Madison University, which defeated the Hens three times last season including a 3-0 win in the CAA tournament quarterfinals.

The last time a Delaware team won three straight matches by identical 3-0 scores was in 1997, when it shut out Fairleigh Dickinson, Morgan State and Navy. In addition, Delaware is now 4-0 at home for the first time since 1997, when it opened the season with eight straight home wins.

This is the first time Murphy has earned CAA Player of the Week honors, although she is the second Hen to earn conference honors this season. Two weeks ago, UD freshman Claire McCormack earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Delaware (9-9 overall, 3-2 in CAA), which has already matched its win total for all of 2002, will return to action Friday, Oct. 17, when the Hens travel to Fairfax, Va., to take on defending CAA champion George Mason University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
