UD’s Koshansky, Nana recognized by CAA

Alena Koshansky
9:55 a.m., March 2, 2004--The Colonial Athletic Association has honored two University of Delaware basketball players, freshman point guard Alena Koshansky of the women’s team and sophomore forward Harding Nana of the men’s team.

Koshansky was named the CAA Co-Rookie of the Week, and Nana was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week.

Koshansky, who shares the award with Kyra Kaylor of the College of William & Mary, played a key role in both conference victories last week, scoring 11 points in UD’s 70-61 win over Drexel on Thursday and notching a career-high 19 points in the 69-56 win over Towson on Sunday.

Against Drexel, Koshansky hit four of five shots, including all three of her attempts from beyond the three-point line. She continued her hot shooting on Sunday, sinking a career-high five three-pointers on the way to a career-high point total. She also had five steals and three assists.

Nana, who shares the award with Virginia Commonwealth's Domonic Jones, was a force as the men's basketball team split two conference contests.

In the 71-69 double-overtime loss to Virginia Commonwealth on Wednesday, Nana had 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He followed that performance with a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds in UD’s 76-62 win over Drexel on Saturday.

For the week, Nana shot 51.6 percent from the floor. He has recorded four straight double-doubles, reaching double figures in both points and rebounds, and that is the longest string by a Delaware player since 2000. Nana averages 13.1 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game.

The recognition of Koshansky marks the first time a player on the UD women's basketball team has earned Rookie of the Week honors since the Fightin’ Blue Hens joined the CAA in 2001. UD had not garnered Rookie of the Week honors since Megan Dellegroti was named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week in January 1999.

Earlier this year, UD Tiara Malcom was named CAA Player of the Week.

For the men’s team, Robin Wentt was named CAA Co-Player of the Week in early February.
