Three Fightin’ Blue Hens are recognized by CAA

2:05 p.m., Feb. 25, 2004--The Colonial Athletic Association has honored three University of Delaware athletes for their recent performances.

Junior goalkeeper Chris Collins was named the CAA Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, freshman attackman Cam Howard was named the Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week and freshman pitcher Carolyn Sloat was named the Softball Rookie of the Week.

The UD men’s lacrosse team is off to a 2-0 start with wins over St. Joseph’s and Lehigh, while the softball team opened the season 3-3 and reached the championship game of the Pirate Classic before falling to host East Carolina.

Collins was outstanding in the nets for the Fightin’ Blue Hens over the first two games, posting eight saves against St. Joseph’s and seven against Lehigh. He has yet to allow a fourth quarter goal this season and has a save percentage of .600 and a goals allowed average of 5.0.

Howard enjoyed an outstanding collegiate debut in the victory over Lehigh, having a hand in three of UD’s five goals. He scored one goal and assisted on both second half goals, including the game-winner.

Sloat registered a 2-2 record in her collegiate debut at the Pirate Classic, earning her first win by pitching eight shutout innings in a 1-0 victory over Fairfield. She struck out seven, walked four and allowed just four hits in the victory. For the weekend, she went 2-2 with a 2.23 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in 22 innings.
