Break-ins demonstrate need for security vigilance

2:24 p.m., April 16, 2004--Several news outlets this week reported that hackers have broken into some of the world's most powerful computer clusters in recent weeks. These hackers took advantage of known operating system vulnerabilities for which patches were available but not installed.

While this particular incident did not affect systems at the University of Delaware, it highlights the necessity for everyone, especially network administrators, to upgrade their systems with the latest security patches, Leila Lyons, director of IT-User Services, said.

Information on security updates is available at the IT Help Center web site [www.udel.edu/help], and UD web site on security and the Internet may be found at [www.udel.edu/security/secinternet.html].
