New recent student trustee joins board

5:30 p.m., May 25, 2004--The University of Delaware Board of Trustees set new rates for room and board, thanked several benefactors and set up endowments at its semiannual spring meeting May 25 in the Trabant University Center.

The Board of Trustees approved increases in dining rates an average of 3.7 percent and residence hall rates an average of 7 percent, both effective in September. The 19-meal-a-week plan will increase by $100 for 2004-05 to $2,790. The cost of a multiple room in a traditional residence hall will increase by $240 to $3,668 for the 2004-05 year.

Also approved were increases in the Student Health Service fee (up $9 per semester to $181), the Winter Session and Summer Session health fees (increases of $2 to $49 for winter and of $3 to $66 for summer); the Comprehensive fee (an increase of $2 to $64 per semester) and the Student Center fee (an increase of $10 to $80 per semester).

In other action, the board:

  • resolved to use the annual distributions of income from the Morris property to fund renovations in the Morris Library, support the library’s Special Collections and support equipment and renovations for the Early Learning Center;
  • authorized the administration to proceed with renovation to the foreign literatures and languages building, the Russell Dining Hall and the Harrington Commons roofs, subject to available funds; and
  • authorized the president to confer degrees at Commencement on May 29.

    The board also expressed gratitude to several benefactors:

  • Mark and Jane Bendett, who pledged $50,000 to establish the Bendett Fellowship Fund in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Mark Bendett is a 1981 alumnus, and his mother, the late Dorothy J. Bendett, was a 1946 alumna);
  • Dr. Jeanne K. Buxbaum, a 1948 alumna who bequeathed the University $4 million, which will be used to create a memorial fund to support the Jeanne K. Buxbaum Chair of Nursing and scholarships in the College of Health and Nursing Sciences;
  • James M. Laser, a 1969 alumnus who pledged $100,000 to establish the Jim Laser Scholarship to support engineering students who are members of the football team or any UD intercollegiate athletics team;
  • Mr. Claire D. LeClaire, who left a gift to the University under his trust that will support the Claire D. LeClaire Professorship in Chemical Engineering;
  • Mr. Roscoe M. Lewis Jr., a 1950 alumnus who bequeathed a gift to the University to support the Roscoe M. Lewis Jr. Scholarship Fund in the College of Engineering;
  • Mrs. Nannie V. Longfellow, who left a bequest to UD that will support the Nannie V. Longfellow Professorship in Health and Nursing Sciences;
  • Miss Mary Smith Morris, a 1935 alumna who left a bequest of approximately $3.5 million to UD;
  • Mr. Donald C. Phillips, a 1948 alumnus who established trust which has resulted in UD receiving approximately $1 million to support the Department of Civil Engineering, a portion of which will be used to endow the Donald C. Phillips Professorship in Civil Engineering; and
  • Mrs. Marjorie J. Tilghman, a 1928 alumna who provided bequests to the University that will support the Francis H. Squire Professorship in History and the Cornelius A. Tilghman Sr. Professorship in English.
