‘Have a Heart’ blood drive returns to UD Nov. 19

3:25 p.m., Oct. 28, 2003--Is your blood type positively true blue? Do you want to join in a great cause, save a life and support the Blue Hens?

If you answer yes to one or all of these questions, you will want to stop by the Multipurpose Room of the Trabant University Center from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19, to take part in the second annual “Have a Heart” Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) blood drive.

UD is looking to repeat last year’s CAA-topping performance, when the school collected 262 units of blood from 374 prospective donors. The event was the largest single-day blood drive in the history of the Blood Bank of Delaware/Eastern Shore (BBDES).

A special award was presented by CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager to student groups who supported the drive during a halftime ceremony on Feb 22. at The Bob.

The 2002 “Have a Heart” national campaign attracted nearly 1,500 donors and collected 1,165 productive units of blood on CAA campuses.

More than half of the 10 schools in the CAA had 100 participants or more in blood drives at their institutions.

Besides UD, other CAA institutions participating in this year’s drive include University of North Carolina Wilmington; Drexel, George Mason, Hosftra, James Madison, Old Dominion, Towson, and the Virginia Commonwealth universities; and the College of William and Mary.

The 2003 CAA “Have A Heart” blood drive began on Sept. 11, at UNC Wilmington and ends on Nov. 19 at UD and Virginia Commonwealth.

According to the CAA web site, UNC collected nearly 200 pints of blood during its Sept. 11 drive. Sponsoring this year’s CAA “Have A Heart” blood drive at UD are the Resident Student Association, HOLA (Hispanic Organization for Latin Americans) and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

There will be giveaways of Coca-Cola and Otis Spunkmeyer cookies, courtesy of UD Dining Services, and T-shirts courtesy of the BBDES.

The River (94.7-FM) will be on site from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., with music and prizes, and special entertainment will be provided by the UD Cheerleaders and YoUDee, who will make a noontime appearance.

Advanced registration is available, but walk-ins also are welcome. Potential donors must be at least 17 years old, weight at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and have had no tattoos or body piercings in the last 12 months. Donors should remember to eat a good meal within three hours of donating.

Fans, alumni and friends of UD in southern Delaware also can participate in UD’s “Have A Heart” blood drive from 1-6 p.m., at the Lewes Senior Center, 310A Nassau Park Rd., Lewes.

For more information click here. To sign up now to donate blood at the Trabant University Center or the Lewes Senior Center, call BBDES at 737-8400.
