2:35 p.m., March 15, 2004--The University, the American Philosophical Society and the Delaware Biotechnology Institute are sponsoring an interdisciplinary conference on ethical issues in the life sciences with emphasis on the environment, food and human health, from Oct. 22-24 at UD.

Papers from faculty, graduate students and others are being sought for the conference, which will focus on such issues as ethical implications of genetic engineering, gene therapy, genetic enhancement, DNA testing, GMO (genetically modified organisms) food, research ethics, environmental pollution, global warming, cloning of people and animals, ethical issues in healthcare, healthcare management and other topics stemming from advances in technology and biotechnology.

Papers should not exceed 12 pages (20 minutes of presentation), be accompanied by an abstract of a maximum of 200 words and directed toward a broad academic audience. Submissions should be sent to the Department of Philosophy, Newark, DE 19716-2567 by May 31, with envelopes labeled APA/UDel Conference. Selections will be announced early this summer.

Keynote speakers for the October conference include Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania, Mark Sagoff of the University of Maryland, Ganesh M. Kishore, vice president of technology/DuPont Agriculture and Nutrition, and Richard Rorty of Stanford University, who will deliver the David Norton Memorial Lecture as part of the conference.
