Blue Hen Touchdown Club honors 12 Delaware seniors

2:45 p.m., Feb. 2, 2004--The 12 seniors on the 2003 University of Delaware NCAA Division I-AA national championship football squad were honored at the annual Blue Hen Touchdown Club Banquet held Friday night, Jan. 30, at the Christiana Country Club.

More than 400 Fightin’ Blue Hens fans turned out for the annual event, which honors the UD seniors and coaching staff. Head Coach K.C. Keeler was on hand to speak to the crowd and meet with fans. Several seniors were also honored with special awards from the 2003 season.

UD enjoyed the finest season in school history as the Hens went 15-1, captured the Atlantic 10 Football Conference title and rolled through the playoffs. UD stormed past Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa and Wofford in the first three rounds before downing previously unbeaten Colgatge 40-0 in the Division I-AA championship game played Dec. 19 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

In winning, UD captured its sixth national football championship but the first since the 1979 NCAA Division II title. It was the Hens’ first national championship in Division I-AA, and the title game shutout was the first in the history of the division.

In addition to the national championship, the Hens have been awarded the Lambert Cup and named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Team of the Year.

The 12 seniors honored Friday night were defensive back Mike Adams, running back Germaine Bennett, cornerback Leon Clarke, quarterback Andy Hall, defensive lineman Nick Iarrobino, running back Antawn Jenkins, defensive end Shawn Johnson, tight end Rick Lavelle, offensive guard Jason Nerys, tight end Jesse O'Neill, defensive back Jamie Rotonda and defensive back Ryan Trask.

Hall was named the Outstanding Senior Offensive Player, Johnson was named the Outstanding Senior Defensive Player and Lavelle was named the Outstanding Senior at End.

Nerys was named the Outstanding Senior Lineman, received the Captain's Award and earned the Newark Elks Club Scholar-Athlete Award for attaining the highest grade point average among the seniors.

Bennett earned the Unsung Hero Award, and Adams was the winner of the Baker-Taylor Award for leadership.
