Record turnout for 2004 Benefits Fair

8:59 a.m., May 12, 2004--A record number of employees attended the 2004 UD Benefits Fair Tuesday, May 11, at the Trabant University Center.

“It was a great turnout,” Nancy Wallace, director of human resources, said. “It’s an event that employees look forward to. It’s a one-stop-shop for employee benefits.”

More than 1,000 employees attended the fair, which was held by human resources staff and featured representatives from 25 benefit and service provider organizations. Employees also enjoyed free hot dogs, fruit and soft drinks.

“What is nice about this is people can come and ask their questions in their own time frame,” Wallace said. “It has the personal touch: A web site can offer great information, but, if you only need one piece of information, you might have trouble finding that. This is an opportunity for a conversation with the vendors and experts.”

At the human resources table, employees who lined up to answer questions about employee identification numbers, available benefits and online services were given free T-shirts, mirrors and notepads.

“The University is moving away from using the Social Security Number as an identifier so we are encouraging employees to remember their employee identification numbers,” Wallace said.

Open enrollment

The 2004 UD Benefits Open Enrollment period continues through May 21. A publication detailing benefit options and highlights for the new fiscal year is being distributed to employees.

During the flexible benefits open enrollment period, employees can change their elections, check their benefit costs and confirm their enrollment for July 1 by logging on to FlexNet. To log on, employees will need:

  • A computer with Internet access;
  • Their UDel Net ID and password; or
  • Their Social Security Number and PIN (Personal Identification Number).

For the convenience of employees who need assistance and for those who do not have access to the Internet, a computer workstation is available in the Office of Human Resources at 413 Academy St., from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

“We are encouraging all employees, even if they are not making changes, to go online and confirm all their benefits,” Wallace said.

This year, each covered employee (not just those making benefit changes) is required to confirm their benefits choices. In addition, the state personnel office requires a completed “Spousal Coordination of Benefits Policy” form of any employee who covers his/her spouse under a University health plan. This form will be provided electronically when confirming benefits enrollment online. Completed forms should be returned to the Office of Human Resources at 413 Academy St.

Human Resources staff are available to answer questions about flexible benefits and enrollment. For more information, call 831-2171 or send an e-mail to [ben-serv@udel.edu].
