UD’s Bennett sets record in pole vault victory

Casey Bennett won the pole vault and set a new UD record.
10:44 a.m., Jan. 12, 2004--The University of Delaware's Casey Bennett set a new school record in winning the women's pole vault, and Lissy Dean captured the women's long jump title to highlight the Delaware Indoor Track and Field Invitational, held Friday night at the Delaware Field House.

The meet was the first home event of the season for both the UD men and women. A total of seven men's teams and eight women's teams competed in the nonscoring meet.

The UD women captured two first-place finishes, posted 11 top six finishes and set two school records during the event.

The Fightin’ Blue Hen men had 11 top six finishes as well, including a second-place finish by Roger Brown in the 60 meters (7.01).

Highlighting the meet were two first-place finishes by Navy's Jen Leatherman in the shot put (45-1 3/4) and weight throw (60-2 1/2) and two first-place finishes by LaSalle's Ryan Fennelly in the men's 800 meters (1:56.86) and mile run (4:15.79).

Bennett captured the women's pole vault competition with an ECAC qualifying height of 11-11 3/4, a mark that broke the previous UD mark of 11-3 3/4 set in 2001. Dean, the defending Colonial Athletic Association outdoor long jump champion, captured the triple jump (36-4 1/4) and was also sixth in the long jump (16-5).

Also for the UD women, Tyechia Smith was second in the 500 meters (1:18.17), Brittany Wright was second in the 60 meters (7.99) and fourth in the 200 meters (26.69), Rachel Young set a school record in the shot put with a toss of 43-11 1/4, Mandy Stille was third in the 60 meter hurdles (9.39), Sarah Bochet was fourth in the 800 meters (2:25.90) and Kristin Frustillo was fifth in the 60 meters (8.09).

Brown was the UD men's top finisher with a second-place finish in the 60 meters (7.01). Also for the Hens, Brett McMonagle was third in the pole vault (12-5 1/2), Mike Yost was fourth in the weight throw (47-8 1/2) and Charlie Williams was fourth in the 400 meters (52.87). Andrew Cox was fifth in the 200 meters (23.56) and sixth in the 400 meters (53.13).
