Delaware’s Alrich selected by Baltimore Bayhawks

Matt Alrich will continue his lacrosse career with the Baltimore Bayhawks.
9:18 a.m., June 4, 2004--University of Delaware men’s lacrosse star Matt Alrich has been selected by the Baltimore Bayhawks in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse draft held Thursday at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn.

Alrich, who plays attack, led the 2004 Fightin’ Blue Hens in scoring with 34 goals and 12 assists. A first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, Alrich recorded 14 career hat tricks and ended his four-year career with 83 goals.

A two-time selection as CAA Player of the Week, the Timonium, Md., native scored a career-high five goals in the regular season finale against Denver.

UD finished the season 10-6 and was ranked as high as 11th in the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Division I poll. The Hens fell to Villanova University in the CAA championship tournament, which was won by Towson University.

Alrich was one of three CAA players selected in the draft. Midfielder Ben DeFelice of Towson was taken by the Philadelphia Barrage in the second round, and midfielder Drew Pfarr, also of Towson, was taken by the Boston Cannons in the fifth and final round.

Baltimore, one of six teams in the league, had the first pick overall and selected Michael Powell of Syracuse University.

The Bayhawks will travel to Denver on Saturday to face the New Jersey Pride in the second game of the league’s western tour.

Baltimore will return home for a game against the Rochester Rattlers at 4 p.m., Sunday, June 13, at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University.

The MLL, an outdoor lacrosse league, has been in operation since 2001. For more on the league, see the web site at [http://www.majorleaguelacrosse.com/].
