UNC Wilmington defeats Hens for CAA championship

5:15 p.m., May 30, 2004--The University of Delaware baseball team fell just short in its quest for its first Colonial Athletic Association championship, losing to host University of North Carolina Wilmington 8-7 and 15-3 on Saturday.

With the two victories, UNC Wilmington wins the conference title and the CAA’s automatic berth in the NCAA championship tournament.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, led by Head Coach Jim Sherman, entered Saturday’s action needing one victory to capture the CAA title. While narrowly missing that goal, the Hens had a remarkable tournament, opening with a victory over top-seeded George Mason University and continuing Friday with a 3-2 victory over UNC Wilmington.

In the 8-7 loss, the Hens took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a single by right fielder Dave Harden that scored first baseman Steve Van Note and a double by center fielder Brent Rogers that scored first team All-CAA catcher Brian Valichka. The lead was short-lived as UNC Wilmington scored four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.

UD regained the lead at 6-4 with one run in the fifth and three in the seventh, with the big hit a two-run double by left fielder Ed McDonnell. In the bottom of the eighth, UNC Wilmington scored three runs for a 7-6 lead.

UD rallied to tie the game 7-7 in the top of the ninth when Harden scored on Valichka’s third hit of the game. However, UNC Wilmington responded with the winning run in the bottom half of the ninth.

In the second game, UNC Wilmington took a commanding lead early on with four runs in the second inning. They extended the lead to 15-0 with a single run in the fourth, five in the sixth and five more in the seventh.

The Hens got one back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run by designated hitter Kelly Buber and two more in the eighth on an RBI single by shortstop Todd Davison and a sacrifice fly by Van Note.
