Blue Hen baseball team sweeps past James Madison
UD defeated James Madison 13-9 on Friday, 5-2 on Saturday and 14-3 on Sunday to improve to 24-16 overall and 7-7 in the conference. It was the first sweep of a conference opponent in a three-game series since May 2002, when the Fightin Blue Hens defeated Hofstra. UD is now in sole possession of fourth place in the CAA, which is led by George Mason at 15-3. Virginia Commonwealth is in second place at 13-5, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington is in third at 9-5. The Hens will return to action at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, when they visit the University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland defeated UD 9-6 in a game played March 31 in Newark. UD will play a three-game weekend series against conference rival Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. Games are scheduled at 3 p.m., Friday, at 2 p.m. ,Saturday and at 1 p.m., Sunday. In Sundays game against James Madison, the Hens smacked five home runs, two by Brock Donovan and one each by Steve Van Note, Kelly Buber and Brent Rogers. UD pitcher Jarame Beaupre picked up the win, improving to 4-1 on the season. He allowed just five hits and one earned run in eight innings of work, striking out eight. Chris Garrick pitched the ninth for the Hens after missing several weeks with an arm injury. Saturday, UDs Mike Mihalik pitched his second complete game of the season for the win. He scattered five hits and struck out six James Madison batters. Van Note hit a home run and Ryan Graham, Brian Valichka and Todd Davison had two hits each. UD opened the series with a win Friday as Dave Harden had two hits, including a two-run home run, and four runs batted in. Ed McDonnell had four hits, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Pitcher Scott Rambo got the win and Joe Coudon picked up the save. Also providing relief help were Mitch Heckert and Mike Iannucci.
