Delaware baseball team takes two from Penn State
The Fightin Blue Hens won the first game 9-3 and the second game 4-3. With the wins, UD improved to 18-15 on the season. The Hens will return to action with a Colonial Athletic Association weekend series beginning Friday at Towson University. In Tuesdays sweep, Van Note had a career day with seven hits in nine trips to the plate, including a double and a triple, and three runs batted in. UD broke the first game open early, scoring nine runs in the first three innings. The Hens plated four runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Dave Harden and Bryan Flynn. Ed McDonnell drove home two runs on a single. In the five-run third, McDonnell tripled home Kelly Buber, Dan Kozek singled in McDonnell, Brent Rogers plated Kozek on a sacrifice fly and Van Note tripled home Ryan Graham and Flynn. Chad Kerfoot picked up his first career win for the Hens, allowing five hits and two earned runs in five innings of work. Mitch Heckert came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out two. UD struck early in the second game, as well, scoring three runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Van Note that scored Rogers and a single by Brian Valichka that scored both Van Note and Todd Davison. Penn State rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game and the Hens pushed across the winning run in the top of the sixth when Graham singled home Valichka. Mike Chiciak started for the Hens, allowing three hits and three runs in four and one-third innings of work. He was relieved by Billy Harris, who worked one and two-thirds innings without allowing a run. UD closer Joe Coudon came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh, allowing the first two runners to reach base before shutting down the Nittany Lions to earn his fourth save of the season.
