Delaware baseball team to open CAA season

9:51 a.m., March 24, 2004--Following a 7-6 loss to the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Tuesday afternoon, the University of Delaware baseball team will hit the road to open its Colonial Athletic Association season with a three-game series against the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will face William & Mary at 7 p.m., Friday, March 26, at 4 p.m., Saturday, March 27, and at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 28.

The Tribe is 16-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference, having dropped a three-game series to George Mason University. They have a 10-1 record in games played at their home field, Plumeri Park.

On Tuesday, UD fell by a single run to UMBC at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Hens had a chance to win with two on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but reliever Kyle Wildasin struck out UD sophomore Brian Valichka to end the game.

The Hens fell to 13-7 and have now lost three straight on the heels of a 13-game winning streak.

UD’s Brent Rogers went 3-for-4 with a home run, and Kelly Buber had two runs batted in. Steve Van Note doubled to lead off the seventh inning and extended his hitting-streak to 17 games.

UD took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but UMBC came back with four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead.

UD cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second when Ryan Graham doubled in Valichka. UMBC extended the lead to 5-2 in the top of the third and the Hens came back with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Wildasin homered off UD reliever Mike Iannucci to lead off the top of the seventh and drove in another run on a fielder’s choice in the eighth to give the Retrievers a 7-3 lead.

Rogers homered for UD in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-4, and the Hens loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of ninth. Bryan Hagerich flied to center to score sophomore Todd Davison and Buber singled to score Van Note, cutting the lead to 7-6.

UD pinch-hitter Dan Kozek followed with a ground out to third on the first pitch for the second out and Valichka struck out to end the game.

The Hens’ Jarame Beaupre (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four hits and four runs­all unearned­in two innings of work.
