Delaware baseball team has 10-game winning streak

Bryan Hagerich’s home run sent Sunday’s game against Marist into extra innings.
10:37 a.m., March 15, 2004--The University of Delaware baseball team has won 10 straight games following a weekend sweep of Marist College.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, now 10-4, will travel to the University of Maryland Baltimore County for a game at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 17.

UD will then return home to face the University of Connecticut in a two-game series at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21, at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Marist put up a tough fight but the Hens prevailed in all three games, winning 6-4 on Friday, 7-5 on Saturday and 5-4 in extra innings on Sunday.

In Sunday’s game, second baseman Brock Donovan singled home first baseman Steve Van Note with the winning run in the 10th inning. Left fielder Bryan Hagerich had sent the contest into extra innings with a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Van Note had four hits in five trips to the plate, and Donovan and Hagerich had two hits each.

UD pitcher Mike Iannucci picked up the win in relief of starter Chris Garrick. He went three and one-third innings, scattering four hits and allowing no runs.

In Saturday’s game, Donovan and catcher Kelly Buber hit home runs to lead the Hens. Van Note and Hagerich had two hits each.

UD pitcher Scott Rambo got the win to go 3-1 on the season. Mitch Heckert and Joe Coudon came on in relief.

Right fielder Dave Harden belted two home runs to lead the Hens in Friday’s game. Van Note also had a home run, and Donovan had three hits in three trips to the plate.

Pitcher Mike Mihalik went eight innings for the win. Coudon pitched the ninth inning to earn a save.
