Blue Hen baseball team wins, hosts Marist College

Jarame Beaupre struck out 11 batters in UD’s 6-1 victory over Rider.
10:06 a.m., March 12, 2004-- Senior pitcher Jarame Beaupre struck out 11 batters in seven innings of work as the University of Delaware baseball team defeated Rider University 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at Richard F. Daly Stadium in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Catcher Brian Valichka, shortstop Todd Davison and left fielder Brian Hagerich each had runs batted in for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who won their seventh consecutive game.

With the victory, the Hens improved to 7-4. They will host Marist College in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday, March 12, at Bob Hannah Stadium. The teams will meet at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

In Thursday’s victory, Beaupre made his first career start for the Hens after transferring from Drexel University. He allowed just five hits and one unearned run in seven innings of work before freshman Billy Harris pitched two scoreless innings to close the game.

Mike Dyszel suffered the loss for Rider, working six innings of five-hit ball before being relieved by Mike Rakoczy.

UD took a 2-0 lead in the second on a single by Hagerich that scored right fielder Dave Harden and another single by Valichka that scored Hagerich.

The Hens increased their lead to 4-0 in the fifth when junior third baseman Ryan Graham and Valichka scored on an error by Rider shortstop Bryan Wagner.

The Blue Hens tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth innings as Davison singled home sophomore center fielder Brent Rogers in the seventh and Hagerich scored on a passed ball in the eighth.

Rider's lone run came in the seventh when first baseman Gene Crimoli singled home Jordan Marchini.
