Blue Hen baseball team sweeps St. Joseph’s series

10:59 a.m., March 1, 2004--The host University of Delaware baseball team swept a three-game weekend series against St. Joseph’s University with an overwhelming offensive display.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 3-4 with the sweep, defeating St. Joseph’s 9-8 and 19-4 on Saturday and 26-4 on Sunday.

UD will next host Delaware State University in a three-game series March 5-7 at Bob Hannah Stadium.

In Sunday’s victory, UD junior Dave Harden went five for six with two home runs and seven runs batted in. Junior Kelly Buber had three hits and four runs batted in, and both senior Steve Van Note and freshman Dan Kozek had three runs batted in.

Junior Chris Garrick picked up the win for UD as he went five innings, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out a career-high 10 batters.

On Saturday, Van Note had six runs batted in and a three-run homer in the second game of the doubleheader. Harden had three runs batted in.

St. Joseph’s took an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth in the first game, but the Hens scored three times for the win. Freshman Brian Hagerich drove home two runs with a game-winning single.

UD struck early in the second game, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first. Both Kozek and Van Note hit home runs to highlight the inning.

Freshman Mitch Heckert picked up the win in game one, tossing three innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out four, and junior Scott Rambo earned the win in game two, striking out five in five innings of work.
