Blue Hen baseball team falls to East Carolina

3:15 p.m., Feb. 23, 2004--The University of Delaware baseball team dropped all three games of a weekend series against host East Carolina University, one of the top teams in Conference USA.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens fell 6-4 on Friday, 4-0 on Saturday and 9-1 on Sunday.

UD will return home to Bob Hannah Stadium for a three-game weekend series against St. Joseph’s University. The Hens will play a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday, Feb. 28, and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29.

Against East Carolina, the Hens got off to a strong start, scoring three runs in the top of the first in Friday’s opener.

Third baseman Ryan Graham singled on the first pitch of the game and moved to third when shortstop Todd Davison followed with a double to left center. First baseman Steve Van Note then followed with a three-run home run to center field, his second of the season and his 21th as a Blue Hen, to give UD a 3-0 lead.

East Carolina got one run back in the bottom half of the first on an RBI single by Darryl Lawhorn.

UD extended its lead to 4-1 in the fourth on a solo home run by left fielder Bryan Hagerich, his first of the season.

East Carolina scored once in the bottom of the fourth and then tied the game in the fifth on a two-run double by Ryan Norwood.

East Carolina took the lead for good in the sixth without the benefit of a hit, scoring on an error, a sacrifice bunt and two wild pitches by sophomore left-hander Joe Coudon, who came on in relief of starter Mike Mihalik.

UD fell victim to strong pitching the next two games. In Saturday’s game, the Hens were shut out for the first time since March 23, 2003 and had just three hits, those by second baseman Brock Donovan, designated hitter Ed McDonnell and catcher Brian Valichka.

In Sunday’s game, East Carolina struck early and often, building a 7-0 lead after just two innings. The Hens scored their only run in the seventh inning when Hagerich drew a bases loaded walk. Davison, Van Note, Hagerich and center fielder Brent Rogers had one hit apiece for the Hens,
