Delaware’s Balmer named Colonial Player of Week

10:50 a.m., Sept. 9, 2003--Jessi Balmer, a junior forward for the University of Delaware field hockey team, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week.

Balmer shares the honor with Jennifer Howard, a Virginia Commonwealth University senior midfielder.

Balmer recorded her first career hat track in UD’s 4-3 win over Villanova on Sunday. It was the first hat trick by a Delaware player since 2001. Balmer also scored a goal in Delaware’s 4-1 win over Penn on Saturday.

This is the second week in a row a UD player has been honored by the conference. All-American candidate Erica LaBar was named the CAA Player of the Week on Sept. 2.

In other field hockey news, UD (3-1) stands just outside the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association NCAA Division I top 20. The Hens received 73 points in the poll. Boston College is ranked No. 20 with 86 points.

Wake Forest University is the top-ranked team and Duke University, which defeated UD 3-1 in the Blue Hen Classic, is ranked No. 5.
