Acclaimed novelist to read from his works

11:30 a.m., April 29, 2004--Noted author Christopher Tilghman will read from his work at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, in 127 Memorial Hall. A reception will follow when he will be available to sign books.

Tilghman also will announce the awards for the best students’ work in Caesura, the University’s literary magazine.

The event, sponsored by the English department, is free and open to the public.

Tilghman will read from his short story collections, “In a Father’s Place” and “The Way People Run,” and his novels, “Mason’s Retreat,” which has been acclaimed here and abroad, and the forthcoming “Roads of the Heart.”

According to the reviewer in Publisher’s Weekly, “Tilghman’s first novel places him securely in the ranks of our most accomplished writers.”

Tilghman’s short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker and has been selected three times for Best American Short Stories.

Among his honors are fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, as well as the Whiting Writer’s Award and the Ingram Merrill Fellowship.

Tilghman is an English professor at the University of Virginia.
